Do you grow Egyptian Walking Onions?

Tell us about your Walking Onion gardens and send us photos — we'll post them here!

Hi there! It looks like I missed the window for ordering this year. If you happen to have any extras available, I would love to buy 1,000 again this year.

Thank you!

Alyson

Hi Tracy,

My name is Amanda. I love your website, with all the little poems and stories.

We started a small backyard-style garden center this year. It began with me selling a few seeds and some tomato and pepper plants on Marketplace, but we have had such an amazing response from our little town that we are now expanding. Our goal is to provide our community with high-quality, locally grown organic plants.

We live in a pretty small town and the only other options are big box stores and one local garden center that is only open a few months each year. I have a few Egyptian Walking Onions myself, but they are only a few years old and producing limited bulbils. My customers keep trying to buy my plants!

I would love to see if it might be possible to purchase your Egyptian Walking Onions in larger quantities wholesale.

Thank you so much for your time, and may you and yours have a blessed evening.

Love your website — https://www.egyptianwalkingonion.com/

Several years ago, when searching for the history of the Walking Onion, I did not find your site but found several others (or so I remember) that talked about Alexander the Great in India and how the Ptolemies brought the onions to Egypt. Now when I search again, I don’t seem to find that information anymore. Now AI seems to be doing most of the searching, and I do not find information supporting that story.

I put a bucket of the onions out in the spring with bags for dog walkers to take home with them. This year I wanted to make a small flyer for folks to take with them. Your website is wonderful!

Tracy, I just came across your website and was very impressed.

My parents grew these onions from around the late 1960s until sometime before 2011. When I returned to Texas they were no longer growing in their garden, at least not that I remember. I did not think to ask my dad about them until last year, but he passed away in 2020.

I am not certain which variety they were, but they seemed to show most of the characteristics you describe for the topsets on your website.

I live in Snyder, Texas and have been growing hardneck garlic and garlic chives. The garlic chives are extremely well suited to the climate out here. They grow much better here than they did when I lived in Gainesville, Florida.

What do you currently have available? Burpee Seeds keeps saying they are out of stock.

Thanks,

Berry

Enjoyed reading your site about walking onions. We want to give growing them a try. If we want to put them in a raised bed, how deep does it need to be?

Thanks,

Bill

Egyptian Walking Onions growing indoors in containers.

Well, the onions are doing well! Didn’t think they would grow this much so quickly! I’m watering once a week, no grow light, in my garage. Do you think I’m still good to keep them like this until I put them in the ground in April?

Would you recommend trimming the greens back at all? The bulbs are only in about 2–3 inches of soil, so I’m a bit worried about them getting leggy. I’m almost tempted to put them in the ground now, since we don’t have super hard freezes here — then cover them when frost is predicted. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for promptly filling my order. I am pleased with the amount I received.

I was given some around 40 years ago by an old man. I enjoyed them then and I know I will enjoy them again when Winter lets up around here.

Hi Tracy,

I am a repeat customer of yours. I've had wild success with your Egyptian walking onion sets when I was living in LA. I recently moved to the Joshua Tree high desert area (zone 8b). I bought 25 sets from you and planted them in late November.

I just wanted to say thank you. I just got through planting the wormwood plants here a little bit ago. I am more than happy and thank you so much. These beautiful little plants will be well taken care of. ❤️ It's a little too hot in south Texas still to plant the onions, but I will get to them. They're in the refrigerator.

Hi Tracy,

Could I get an order of 1,000 walking onion topsets for September?

Hi Tracy,

Thank you very much for sending the Egyptian Walking Onions for my recent order. I’ve actually ordered these for my family home, and I live across the country. I’ll be there in about five weeks.

Is there a way to safely preserve the bulbs for that time period before I can plant them?

Thank you,

August

Hi Tracy!

I'd like to order 1,000 of the red topsets this year, please.

What is the largest size you offer on the white topsets?

Thank you!

Alyson

Tracy,

I received the Egyptian Walking Onions yesterday.

I will not be able to get them in the ground immediately. What is the best way to store them? Could I plant them in containers and then transplant them later this fall?

I grew up in East Texas, and my parents were big gardeners. My father was an unmechanized cotton farmer — mule powered — until I was about 10 years old. We lived in houses built on blocks or post-and-beam construction, with no basements. That left a dry, sandy crawl space under the house where we stored potatoes and onions for use over the winter.

A few rotted, but most made it through the mild winters. I vividly remember my mother sending me under the house to retrieve potatoes or onions for the next meal.

Unfortunately, my current home is modern slab construction, so there is no crawl space to store the onions.

Greetings Tracy,

I wanted to let you know that the berry cuttings and daylily fans arrived today here in tiny-town Cayuga.

The plants were very well packaged, and everything is so vibrant.

Thank you so much for offering these plants, and for including bonus cuttings and plants as well. I had no idea that autumn olives could be propagated by cuttings — I learned something new!

It even started raining just as the plants arrived, which made it perfect. I enjoyed planting them in the rain.

Your generosity is very much appreciated.

With lots of love and gratitude,

Akira

Greetings Tracy,

I wanted to let you know that the plants arrived this afternoon and have been successfully planted.

Thank you so much for offering these plants, and for the extras as well. I am still in the process of regenerating the soil, but I hope the cuttings will get well situated.

With lots of love and gratitude, and wishing you an abundant fall and restful winter seasons.

Akira

Hi Tracy,

If you have a newsletter or email list, would you please add me? I would love to stay in touch.

I would like to order 25 white topsets, but it looks like I need to wait until ordering opens in the fall. If I am mistaken and can order now, please let me know.

Thank you,

Karla

Hi Tracy,

I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thank you for the beautiful Egyptian Walking Onions. I am watching them grow in delight.

I ordered from you last September, I think it was. This time of year is so exciting — although I love the winter too.

Hi Tracy,

I have ordered the burlapped Egyptian Walking Onion plants for both my son and daughters, and they have grown so well that I wanted to order another one for my other son.

Your website says they are sold out. Will you have more of these for sale soon? His birthday is coming up, and it would be the perfect gift.

Please let me know.

Thank you,

Valerie

Good morning,

I’m looking to order some Egyptian Walking Onions for a fall planting. I haven’t had them before, but the perennial aspect is very appealing. How far in advance should I place the order?

Is there any taste difference between white and red? Do you have a preference?

I would rather order from you than a big commercial operation with questionable product that’s pumped with Miracle-Gro or other fertilizers. Do you spray them with anything?

I grow and sell microgreens, so I prefer supporting a small enterprise.

Regards,

Roxana

Hi Tracy, I hope you’re well.

I wanted to see if it’s possible to place another bulk order for your Egyptian Walking Onion bulbs. I saw that you’re sold out on your site, but wanted to check if you might have any more tucked away. 🙂

Christy

Hi Tracy,

I just placed an order for the Egyptian Walking Onions and wanted to mention that I heard about you and the onions from Theresa at Tending My Garden. It’s the first time I’ve ever heard of these, and I’m excited to grow them.

Your website is wonderful and very informative. I look forward to receiving them.

Thank you,

Linda

Hi Tracy,

I just placed a pre-order under my maiden name/email for your walking onions! I’ve been looking for them for a while and I’m so glad I stumbled across your site. I’m really impressed with all you’ve done to keep walking onions alive and thriving — they really are a miracle little plant!

I also wanted to reach out because I have a large thornless blackberry that has done incredibly well. We planted what looked like a dead stick about four years ago, and it took off. Last year we had canes over 10 feet long, and it produces heavily with very little care.

If you’d ever like a cutting, I’d be happy to send one your way — no trade or shipping needed. I’m located in northwest Indiana (zone 6a).

Thank you, and I’m excited to grow your onions!

Hi Tracy,

I bought Egyptian Walking Onions from you last year, and you sent some horseradish as well. Do you have both of those available this year?

I would like to buy more of each. Can you let me know what will be available and when?

Thanks!

Maggie

Hi Tracy,

I just purchased a little batch of onions from you. I was gifted some last year from a friend, but they didn’t do well.

Do you have a favorite way of growing these to ensure their survival? 😆 I really want the ones I ordered to live.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

They are happy and healthy! Growing like a weed. 😀

Hello Tracy,

I ordered onions on the 21st and am so thrilled to have found you.

I am in the process of writing about tree onions on my website, and I will be sharing a link to your site with my readers.

The thousands of pictures on my website are from my own gardens, but since I do not currently grow tree onions, I do not have any photos of them. May I use the beautiful image you have on your “About” page? I will, of course, credit your site.

Thank you, Tracy!

Earlier Letters from Growers

Just wanted to let you know that my order arrived today in fine shape. I will be planting them after we get done with this dip in the temp we are having here this week. As they have always said around here, “don’t like the weather? Wait fifteen minutes, it’ll change”. The bulbils are excellent size, much larger than I expected! I used to have a crop of these, but they got lost in a move some time ago. These things are very hard to find. Thank you for making these available. If you would please notify me when you get some more of the white available. That is what I used to have 30 years ago, and they were fantastic in growth and flavor. I will be recommending you to others.

Again, thank you.

Hi Onionhead!

I am very happy with my sets. I received more than I ordered and only a few did not "take", so I have lots of onions growing now. They have not started making babies yet, but I am eagerly awaiting the day. I would certainly recommend you to anyone who asks and I appreciate that you are such a good company which provides such excellent customer service (a rare thing these days).

Thanks for following up.

I just checked and measured the sets I planted 6 weeks ago. They are 16 to 22 inches tall and very healthy looking. I believe I got 100% germination.

I'm looking forward to spring when I can taste them. We have had a dry spell (after the wettest summer in years) the past 3 weeks, but the onions are still going strong.

Thanks for sending such excellent quality sets.

I am very satisfied with my order. I'll probably be coming back to you for some more. I ordered some of these years ago from someone else and they were not near as good quality as yours. Thanks!

My onions are doing GREAT. I just watered and counted and I have 14 up. Some are up to a foot or better tall. Green, firm, and very healthy.

They LOVE horse poop BTW!!

Thanks for asking! If you want a photo let me know!

Thank you for offering these heirloom onions. I grew up with them. They were given to my parents and were over 50 years old then. After growing wild for 30 years, they were stolen out of my yard by a new and unscrupulous neighbor. Now I can get my onions back.

:D

The sets I received are doing just fine. As a matter of fact, I intend to order more come spring. Thanks for asking.

My little onions seem very happy. The leaves are about 8 inches high and even survived our heavy freeze. I am eager to see their little tops this summer and give them a taste. Love your site, I return to it just as a reminder from time to time. Thank you again.

I received the lovely Egyptian onions you sent. We are very pleased with your sets and look forward to doing business again.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I'm so happy, I received the onions yesterday. Thank you so much for the extras. I have planted some in the garden, some in the greenhouse and saved some for next year in case they fail.

One very happy customer.................

Hello!

I happened upon your website while looking for information about my Egyptian Walking Onion plants. What a great site you have! It's really fun and informative and very well designed. And your photos are beautiful! I learned things about my onions that I never knew — thanks!

I am now 64 years old and have managed beds of these onions since I was in high school. We bought a house that had a bed of these onions already growing. We used them in greens and in salads. When I moved out on my own a few sets went with me. The rest is history. I have spread them to friends and family and will always mention your website. I did not know what the onions were called until a few years ago when I started to search the internet. It is a great plant and takes very little effort to grow. As a matter of fact they will do better if just left alone for the first two to three years. You have a great web site. I have enjoyed it very much.

Frank

Many thanks for filling my order, enclosing the card and putting the sets in the onion bag. The package arrived well in time for Samir's birthday. We plant tomorrow. Looking forward to the results!!!

Thanks again,

Tom

Tracy,

I think it only took a couple of hours for me to place the order and hear you have already shipped it. You are what internet business is all about. Some folks don't have any idea how to attract good business.

Thank you so much!!!
