Growing & Care
What are Egyptian Walking Onions?
Egyptian Walking Onions are perennial onions that grow onion bulbs in the ground and “topsets” (small onion bulblets) at the top of a stalk. When the topsets get heavy, the stalk bends and the topsets can root where they land — which is how they “walk.”
What planting zones do they grow in?
They’re famously cold-hardy and grow well in many regions. If you’re unsure, check our Zones & Weather page for guidance.
Sun or shade?
Full sun is ideal, but they can tolerate light shade. In hot climates, a little afternoon shade can help.
What soil do they like?
Loose, well-drained soil is best. They’re tough plants, but they’ll produce larger bulbs and better topsets when the soil isn’t waterlogged and has some organic matter.
How often should I water them?
Water normally while they’re establishing. Once established, they’re fairly drought-tolerant. Consistent moisture during active growth helps produce stronger plants and nicer topsets. Newly planted topsets must remain moist to establish roots. The onions will go into dormancy in late summer or fall, and they can handle drier conditions then.
Are they invasive?
They’re enthusiastic, but not scary-invasive. They spread slowly (often just a couple feet per year) and are easy to control: simply harvest the topsets.
Do I need to divide clumps?
Yes, eventually. Older clumps can get crowded, and crowded clumps tend to make smaller topsets and smaller bulbs in the ground. Dividing every few years keeps plants vigorous.
Topsets & Planting
What is a “topset”?
A topset is a miniature onion bulblet that grows at the top of the plant. Topsets are complete little plants — you can plant them directly and they’ll grow into new walking onions. More about topsets.
When should I plant topsets?
In many climates, late summer through fall is great. Spring planting also works. If the ground is workable and not frozen solid, you can often plant.More about planting.
How deep should I plant topsets?
Plant them like small onion sets: generally shallow, with the top just under the soil surface. If you’re planting very tiny topsets, keep them extra shallow.
How far apart should I plant them?
Give them room: a few inches apart for a patch, 6 inches for rows, or wider if you want large clumps and easier dividing later.
Will my topsets produce topsets the first year?
Often, no — many plants focus on greens the first season. Bigger topsets have a better chance of producing sooner. Once established, they return each year and produce stronger topset clusters.
Do they make seeds?
They may produce small flowers, but viable seed is rare. Most plants spread by topsets and division rather than seed.
Harvest & Use
Are all parts edible?
Yes — greens, topsets, and underground bulbs are edible. Greens can be used like scallions/chives. Topsets can be planted or used like small onions.More about culinary uses.
When can I harvest greens?
You can snip greens whenever they’re growing. If your patch is young, harvest lightly the first season so plants establish well.
When are topsets ready to harvest?
Topsets mature in summer. They’re ready when they’re plump, the outer layers have turned red, and the stalk has turned golden brown.
Can I replant topsets right away?
Yes. You can plant them immediately, or store them for a bit in a cool, dry place before planting.
Ordering & Shipping
How are topsets sold?
Topsets are sold in count-based batches (not by the pound). Please see the Order Topsets page for current batch sizes and availability.
When do you ship?
Shipping timing depends on harvest and weather. We ship when topsets are mature and safe to travel. Generally, the shipping season is September - December. For current timing details, see the Order Topsets page.
How are topsets packaged?
Topsets are packaged to stay dry, cushioned, and protected during travel. If you ever have questions about your shipment, please Contact Us
What if my topsets arrive with sprouts?
That’s normal. Many topsets sprout. You can plant them as soon as possible or keep them cool and dry for a short time.
Do you accept returns?
Perishable plant material has special considerations. Please see Shipping for the full policy.
Troubleshooting
My plants are flopping over — is that bad?
Not necessarily. Stalks can bend when topsets get heavy, in strong wind, or late season. In the classic “walking” behavior, the bending stalk is part of the magic.
My topsets are tiny this year — why?
Common reasons include overcrowded clumps, low nutrients, too much shade, or drought stress. Dividing clumps and improving soil often helps.
Do walking onions need winter protection?
Usually not. They’re hardy. In extremely exposed areas or where freeze-thaw heaving is common, a light mulch can help stabilize the soil.
